A shrine was built here in 1685 to honor Seong Sam-mun and the five others ministers who were executed with him for their plot to restore King Danjong to the throne after he was exhiled by his uncle. He was born to Lee Wonsu and Shin Saimdang in 1536. He passed Saengwonsi, a type of preliminary exam in 1564 (the 9th year of King Myeongjong), and another 9 exams so he was called Gudo Jangwongong. He served in key positions. He is thought to be one of the top two scholars along with Yi Hwang. Jaunseowon Confucian Academy is home to the tablets of Yulgok Yi I and his family’s graveyard, located at the foot of Jaunsan Mountain. Jaunseowon Monument and Memorial Stone of Yi I Scholar are located here as well. Yulgok Memorial Hall displays his goods, and his biography. Dasan Chodang (Historic Site Related to Jeong Yak-yong) (다산초당 (다산 정약용 유적지)) - Homepage : www.gangjin.go.kr - Tel : +82-61-430-3911 Dasan Chodang is the house where Jeong Yak-yong (pen-name Dasan, 1762-1836) lived during his exile. He was a scholar of the late Joseon dynasty and is noted for his great contributions to the development of practical learning in Korea. After he was expelled to Ganjin for writing a secret letter of appeal for religious freedom, which later was named ‘the Hwang Sa-yeong Baekseo’, he lived in the house for 18 years while studying practical learning (‘Silhak’ in Korean). Most of his famous books were written in Dasan Chodang. While walking along a road near Dasan Chodang, you can see the Cheonilgak pavilion, which offers a great view of beautiful Gangjin Bay.
