Kim Chung-seon was a Japanese general who defected to Korea during the Imjin War. Shortly after arriving on Korean soil as a commander of a Japanese army, Kim, together with his soldiers, defected to Korea, a choice that has been traditionally attributed to his respect for Korean culture. He transferred the technology of manufacturing rifles to the Korean army and contributed greatly in battles in Gyeongju and Ulsan. Bogildo Island Seyeonjeong Pavilion (보길도 세연정) - Homepage : www.wando.go.kr - Tel : +82-61-550-5761 Yun Seon-do (1587~1671), a non-military civil administrator and poet in the mid Joseon dynasty, could hardly contain his anger after hearing the news that the king had surrendered during the Byeongjahoran War (Chinese invasion of Korea in 1636). Following the events, he decided to live in seclusion by moving to Jeju Island. However, on the way to Jeju, he came across Bogildo Island and he was so inspired by its beauty that he ended up settling down on Bogildo instead. For the following 13 years, he composed great poems such as "Eobusasisa (Fisherman's Song for Four Seasons)." Some of the mountain peaks and rocks named by him still remain on the island. Bogildo Island (보길도) - Homepage : www.wando.go.kr - Tel : +82-61-550-5152 Located about 12 kilometers away from Wando Port, Bogildo Island was once inhabited by a famous Joseon poet named Yun Seon-do, who found the island by chance when he sought shelter from a typhoon he encountered on his way to Jeju Island. During his 10-year stay on the island, he built 25 buildings, including Seyeonjeong and Nakseonjae Pavilions. His most noted work "Eobusasisa" was also written here. The island has three beautiful beaches, serving as a popular vacation destination. Constructed with a scenic backdrop of the local port and the vast sea, the park houses 16 retired military crafts of 13 models. On display at the park are vintage tanks, historical artillery, combat planes, and warships including the Wibongham Ship, a vessel that was used in combat during the Vietnam War. Visitors can also explore the interior of decommissioned warships. It was designated as a National Folklore Cultural Heritage in 1967. The one-syllable word "Seon" in Seongyojang means boat. Gyeongpo Lake was right in front of Seongyojang House at the time it was built, thus making is accessible by boat. Seongyojang House has all the features of a typical upper class residence during the Joseon period. The complex even has a large pond with a pavilion named Hwallaejeong Pavilion.
